William Swales Cobblestone Houses

William Swayles built 11 or 12 cobblestone houses for himself, his children and for tenants on what later became Sodus Fruit Farm. These included:

  1. Sod-23 Preston house (Gaylord) for his daughter, Elizabeth, wife of John Preston (Buried Sodus Rural Cemetery).
  2. Sod-35 Maulendyke house (Dufloo Road) for his son, John, (buried, Swales Cemetery).
  3. Sod-20 Gibson - Lake Road, for son, William Jr., buried Sodus Rural Cemetery. Editor's Note: WHO website states house built for son George.
  4. (Two) Sodus Fruit Farm, for himself, buried Sodus Rural Cemetery.
  5. Sod-19 Monar House, Lake Road (formerly Swales) built for son, George. Editor's Note: Carl Schmidt states house was inherited by son, William Swales Jr.
  6. Sod-39 Ternoois-Fletcher house [Miller's House], south of Preston's - not known for whom built. The 1858 map shows a J. Preston owned residence at or near this location.
  7. Dearlove House - south side of Halcus Road for daughter Sarah, now in ruins.
  8. Three or four houses built on Sodus Fruit Farm, now gone.

This information from his great-granddaughter, Emma Potwine, ca. 1955.
